Targeting Scottish Open history books

World No. 6 Xander Schauffele returns to the Renaissance Club this month in a bid to become just the third player to win multiple Genesis Scottish Open titles.

 

The 29-year-old battled to a one-shot victory over fellow countryman Kurt Kitayama at last year’s tournament in what was a hugely memorable week on the DP World Tour.

 

It marked the first time an event outside of the Majors and WGCs was co-sanctioned by the PGA TOUR – an example of the growing strategic alliance between both Tours.

 

A sign of positive change within the global world of golf, and now Schauffele is on the cusp of joining Ernie Els and Ian Woosnam as the only players to win the illustrious title on more than one occasion.

"It's an incredible feeling," said Schauffele after his win last year. "It was a very stressful day and this is very rewarding. "I was just trying to find something. Every time I wanted to cut it, I hit away right, and every time I wanted to draw it, it went away left. "It was nice to hit a few better shots coming down the stretch and calm the ship. It was looking pretty bad for a bit, but this one is extra special because of that."

 

 

This year’s tournament will feature huge importance yet again as some of biggest names in the sport descend on Scotland’s east coast to complete one of the best fields of the golfing year.

 

The likes of Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay are all set to tee it up alongside the defending champion in the third Rolex Series event of the season.

 

However, Schauffele is confident he can become the first ever player to successfully defend the Scottish Open later this month.

 

 

“I can’t wait to return to The Renaissance Club to defend my Genesis Scottish Open title,” added the 29-year-old.

 

“It was a special week, winning my first title in Europe and the way I did it, digging in on Sunday and making it count down the stretch to get it over the line.

“The fans really got behind me, which just added to the experience of playing in Scotland, and I’m looking forward to coming back in July.”

 

The Ryder Cup star’s much-anticipated return to Scotland will be followed by a trip to Liverpool for the 151st Open Championship a week later.

 

The Californian is still looking to claim his first Major title despite large success in the sport’s grandest events so far with 11 top ten finishes to his name in 25 starts.

 

He’ll be hoping another encouraging performance at the Renaissance Club will set him up perfectly to lift the Claret Jug the following week.
