Welcome to the 2023 Senior Open Presented by Rolex as the Major returns to Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Wales for a third time in the past decade and the first since 2017.
This venue, offering stunning views across Swansea Bay to the Gower Peninsula, is steeped in history and tradition. Founded in 1891 and granted royal status in 1909, it has hosted many prestigious tournaments over the years, the Amateur Championship and the Walker Cup among them.
Our brand’s support for The Senior Open and the Legends Tour is central to the long-standing commitment to the game we have demonstrated for more than half a century. In 1967 Arnold Palmer was joined by his great rivals and friends Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player – The Big Three – as the first Rolex Testimonees from the sport. The partnership has extended to all levels of the game in the decades since, encompassing junior, amateur and professional ranks. The ties with elite senior golf remain special and particularly strong.
This week in Wales, an impressive field is sure to deliver golf of the highest order. Among the players taking part are several Rolex Testimonees, including Bernhard Langer, the most successful player in Senior Major championship history and who has won this tournament four times, including twice at Royal Porthcawl. Joining him are Thomas Bjørn, K.J. Choi, Retief Goosen, José María Olazábal and Jeev Milkha Singh. Gary Player, a member of The Big Three, will take part in Tuesday’s pro-am.
May I wish them and all participants the very best of luck over the next four days of competition. Your excellence on and off the course throughout long and glorious careers is to be admired, and has been key to growing the appeal of this great game across the globe.
Finally, on behalf of Rolex, we trust all those watching from the galleries will witness another great spectacle from which they can take home many special memories.
