THE HISTORY OF THE WENTWORTH CLUB

OVER 100 YEARS OF GOLFING HERITAGE

The Wentworth Club holds a century of history, with the West Course first originating in 1922 after design by world-renowned architect Harry Colt.

The club in fact boasts three 18-hole layouts: the East Course, also a Colt creation back in 1924, and the recent Edinburgh Course. Additionally, a nine-hole par three track adds to the variety.

Yet, while the West Course is the most recognised as now a regular DP World Tour venue, not the entirety of the circuit remains unaltered.

Ernie Els Design introduced modifications in 2005 with the par 72 track then undergoing significant renovations in 2009 and 2017 through collaboration with the South African’s design company.

Now, at just over 7200 yards long, the course presents a challenging yet equitable golfing experience, featuring many iconic holes on the European golfing calendar.

But what lends Wentworth its unique charm is nostalgia. It serves as the headquarters for the DP World Tour and has played host World Match Play Championship events as well as the 10th staging of the Ryder Cup back in 1953.

Back then, it was still Great Britain vs USA over a two day event, which that year ended in an American victory with a score of 6.5 – 5.5.

There are few venues in European golf that hold such importance regarding the state of the current game, while also possessing decades of history. It’s a unique place.

Nestled within the Wentworth Estate, one of London’s most opulent private estates established concurrently, the club finds itself intertwined with lavish residences owned by top golfers and celebrities.

The club itself is now owned by Beijing-based Reignwood Investments who purchased the site from fashion industry entrepreneur Richard Caring back in 2014.

Furthermore, Wentworth boasts a comprehensive tennis and health club which were designed by architects Broadway Malyan.

This impressive complex which includes everything from a dance studio to health spa, which cost £9 million and was completed in 1999, adds to the club’s allure.
